MOPRC ERH Program Provides Commuters a Free Ride Home

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) new Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program is free to registered participants who experience an emergency while at work. The ERH replaces the previous Guaranteed Ride Home service with an added benefit; the participants pay nothing to use the service.

In an effort to reduce the barriers to carpooling, vanpooling, walking, biking or riding transit, ERH will provide four free taxi rides home from work for registered commuters who cannot make their alternative commute home due to illness, family emergency, or unexpected overtime. To register, participants simply fill out the registration form before they are eligible to use the program.

Registered RideSolutions commuters who carpool, vanpool, take transit, or bike can access their account and redeem a voucher for a free taxi ride home from work up to four times in a calendar year. The voucher must be printed and presented to the taxi driver in lieu of payment. The voucher covers 100 percent of the taxi ride including tip. MORPC has contracted with Yellow Cab of Columbus to provide this service for our 15 counties including Delaware, Franklin, Fairfield, Fayette, Hocking, Knox, Licking, Logan, Madison, Marion, Morrow, Perry, Pickaway, Ross and Union.

"By removing the upfront cost of the taxi fare, RideSolutions is hoping more individuals will be encouraged to try alternative transportation options without the fear of being stranded at work,” states Thea Walsh, MORPC Director of Transportation Systems and Funding. “Emergencies rarely happen but the fear of being stranded is real for many commuters.”
