Overview
Rumpke provides recycling, yard waste, and refuse collections for the City. In addition to weekly citywide collections, the refuse hauler handles large pick-ups and bulk items on a regular basis, with no additional charge to the residents. Recyclable items include newspapers, magazines, corrugated cardboard, paperboard packaging, telephone books, aluminum, bi-metal and steel cans, glass, and plastics. Missed Pickup: If your trash, recyclables, bulk items or yard waste do not get collected, report the miss by 5:00pm the next day to the Gahanna Water, Sewer, and Refuse Department at 614-342-4440. Missed trash items reported after that time must be held until the following week. The hauler will not be responsible for non-trash items inadvertently placed with or near refuse.
REMINDER: Items should be placed at the curb prior to 6a.m. the day of collection but no earlier than 5p.m. the day before.
Collection Guidelines
Yard Waste
Yard waste includes organic waste from gardening and landscaping. Examples are grass clippings, leaves, twigs, branches, and shrubbery. After collection, yard waste is recycled into premium mulch.
- Loose Material
Place loose material in biodegradable bags (paper, kraft, or 100% compostable according to ASTM standards) or rigid containers that are marked with a sticker from the Gahanna Water, Sewer, and Refuse Department. Biodegradable bags are available at many local grocery stores as well as home and garden stores. Please do not line these bags or containers with plastic bags.
- Branches
Branches less than 8 inches in diameter must be cut to 4 feet or shorter in length and bundled with string or twine. The bundle cannot be wider than 2 feet in diameter.
- Weight Restrictions
Each biodegradable bag, container, or bundle must weigh less than 50 pounds. Containers meeting this weight requirement will likely have a 30-35 gallon capacity.
- Unacceptable Items
Plastic bags, plastic pots, food waste, rocks, and dirt are not accepted.
Refuse
Below is a guide of the items that Rumpke will accept for refuse collection. Items that are not accepted include hazardous waste, appliances with Freon, and tires.
- Containers
Use heavy plastic bags and/or 20-30 gallon trash cans with lids and handles for refuse containment.
- Bulk Items
Furniture, carpeting, mattresses, box springs, and other bulk items will be collected with the regular refuse when placed at the curb. Carpeting and padding must be rolled in a tight bundle AND TIED OR TAPED to facilitate easy handling. Large pieces must be cut into 4-foot lengths. Residents with carryout service must place all bulk items at the curb.
Recycling
After collection, recyclables are taken and processed at one of Rumpke's Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF). Here recyclables are separated by category and prepared for their respective markets. They are then shipped to manufacturers that recycle the items into new products.
All households have been provided with two recycling bins, one with a lid for light weight items that might blow away. The City is not responsible for lost or misplaced recycling bins. It is advisable to label the bottom of your bins with your street address. To replace your recycling bin, please visit or contact the Gahanna Water, Sewer, and Refuse Department at 614-342-4440.

Household Hazardous Waste
Hazardous, corrosive, toxic or ignitable wastes, including medical and hospital wastes, liquids, and sludge, cannot be accepted by landfills due to Federal and EPA regulations and are excluded from collection. Senior Discount on Refuse Fees
Senior Citizens 60 or over may sign-up to receive a discount on their trash bill by bringing their driver’s license or other official ID to the Water, Sewer, and Refuse billing office at Gahanna City Hall. For details, please contact the Gahanna Water department at 614-342-4440.

Bulk Waste Items (e.g. furniture) – Furniture, carpeting, mattresses, box springs, and other bulk items will be collected with the regular refuse when placed at the curb. Carpeting and padding must be rolled in a tight bundle AND TIED OR TAPED to facilitate easy handling. Large pieces must be cut into 4-foot lengths. Residents with carryout service must place all bulk items at the curb.
Christmas Trees – Whole Christmas trees will be collected with yard waste on pickup day. All decorations and stands must be removed including ornaments, tinsel, garland and lights. TREES IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED. The trees will be taken to a compost facility to be recycled into mulch and compost with other regular yard waste collected.
Needles – You can make your own disposal container using an empty plastic laundry detergent bottle, bleach bottle, or other thick plastic container. Common items that meet this are: liquid detergent and bleach bottles, 2 liter pop bottles, and coffee can if the lid is well taped to the can. Once you have your container:
1. Label the bottle “SHARPS-DANGEROUS” with permanent marker
2. Keep the lid on tightly between uses
3. Keep covered and out of the reach of children
4. Dispose of it in the trash when full, with the lid on tightly and taped shut
Old Car Battery – State law bans lead acid batteries from landfill disposal. You can dispose of your lead acid batteries at many auto service centers and places where you purchase auto batteries.
Old Paint – The paint must be in a solid state before it can be placed in the trash. It can be air dried or solidified using cat litter or sand.
Freon Containing Appliances – A certified technician must remove CFC (Chloroflurocarbons) from Freon containing appliances including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, etc. and place a certificate of removal on the item. The appliance can then be put at the curb with your weekly trash for removal. Doors MUST be removed from appliances such as refrigerators and freezers as a safety measure.
