Income Tax
Understanding Your Taxes
Gahanna’s primary source of General Fund revenue is our local income tax. The current income tax rate is 2.5% and is applied to income earned by individuals within the City because of employment status (an individual who resides elsewhere but works in the City) or residential status (an individual who lives in the City). The 2.5% is also applied to business net profits that are located within the City. For individuals who reside in the City, a 100% credit is provided for taxes paid to another municipality where they work. The credit is applied to the lesser of the tax paid to another municipality or the tax imposed by the City. The City requires every resident who has earned income to file an individual tax return annually even if no tax is due to the City upon applying the credit. If a resident has no earned income or falls under another exemption to the income tax, the City requires the appropriate exemption form be filed.
The Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA) manages the City’s income tax collections and annual filing requirements. Individuals and businesses may create an account to file forms electronically at http://www.RITAOhio.com. There is also the ability to Fast File electronically at the same website without creating an account. In lieu of e-filing, individuals and businesses may also obtain the appropriate forms from the website to complete manually and mail to RITA at the address listed on your form. E-filing is strongly encouraged. RITA also provides taxpayer assistance by phone and in-person at various locations throughout the state. The Worthington Office is the closest for Gahanna residents for in-person assistance and office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
